Multiples are often born prematurely. Mothers of preemies go through a jarring experience from delivering their babies too soon, the idyllic image of motherhood immediately after birth, shattered. Our children go from womb to incubator, not skin-to-skin with us. Tubes go into their mouths and noses, and they live in diapers too big and blankets that never seem warm enough (at least to us) for what seems like a long time.
Parents of preemies in the NICU do not get to bring their children home after a day or two. It’s usually weeks or months. How do we explain to our children what it was like? There are many books out there about bringing a baby home but not preemies. This is the void Jessica Watson wants to fill with her new book, Soon.
Soon tells “the story of a premature baby from birth to NICU to childhood in words a child can understand. Beautiful, realistic illustrations give a glimpse into the NICU world without overwhelming young children with too many tubes and wires.”
I loved the book. The writing is poetic and the illustrations are beautiful. It’s a gentle guide to explaining a unique journey to children. I can’t wait to read it with my twins when they’re older.
To celebrate the launch of Soon, Jessica is hosting a giveaway of her book and we’re participating by giving away a copy of our book, Multiples Illuminated: A Collection of Stories and Advice from Parents of Twins, Triplets and More.
We received a complimentary copy of Soon by Jessica Watson for review purposes. All opinions are our own.
